What to Expect

Laying the foundation

Chiropractic care is like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work correctly. When building a house, if you tried to put up your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually collapse. If you tried to put on your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. The same is true for your body. Your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care . . .

Phase 1: Relief Care

If you are in pain when you come into our office, the first objective is to help you feel better. Depending on the severity of your problem, it is typical to need care 2-3 times per week for several weeks. In this phase of care it is our goal to help you achieve a decrease in your pain of at least 25% to 50% within the first 3 weeks of care. If this does not occur you will be reevaluated, the approach to treatment will be changed, additional diagnostic studies will be ordered or you will be referred to another specialist. Basically we do not believe that you should come in for treatment for any extended period of time if you are not getting the results that you need. We want to help direct your care and help you accomplish your health care goals!

Phase 2: Rehabilitative Care

If indicated based, on the examination and x-ray results, you may be prescribed a course of rehabilitative care. During this care phase, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, thereby helping prevent re-injury. Various methods are utilized during this phase of care and may include overall conditioning, ball exercises/core stabilization and the use of stacked weight equipment to target the neck and/or back muscles. Don't worry, this is not like a "gym" workout. Most patients do not break a sweat although they noticed significant spinal strengthening. It is typical to need care 3 times per week for a period of 6 to 7 weeks, depending on your overall health and the severity of your problem.

Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed, it is important to come in for periodic adjustments to avoid problems in the future. Usually, this only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor approximately once a month, based on your lifestyle and goals. This phase is analagous to changing the oil in your car...preventative maintenace saves time, money and breakdowns in the long run!
